Smith’s Landmark £1m Move Reshapes Women’s Football

Arsenal Smash Transfer Record with £1m Signing of Olivia Smith

European champions Arsenal have broken new ground in women’s football by signing Canadian forward Olivia Smith from Liverpool for a reported £1 million ($1.34 million), making the 20-year-old the first female player to command a seven-figure transfer fee.

The landmark deal surpasses the previous record set in January when American defender Naomi Girma moved from San Diego Wave to Chelsea for £900,000, though that transfer had already crossed the $1 million threshold. In men’s football, Trevor Francis was the first to reach the million-pound mark back in 1979, when he joined Nottingham Forest from Birmingham City.

“It’s my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe, and I’m excited to get started with Arsenal,” Smith said following the announcement.

Capable of playing as a striker or on the wing, Smith impressed in her debut season at Liverpool, finishing as the club’s top scorer with nine goals and earning their player of the season award despite a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Women’s Super League.

Arsenal, fresh from their Champions League triumph, have embarked on an ambitious recruitment drive. They recently re-signed England international Chloe Kelly from Manchester City and added left-back Taylor Hinds from Liverpool. But the capture of Smith is seen as a major statement of intent from Renee Slegers’s side, who finished runners-up to Chelsea in the league last season.
